Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Indian and Southeast Asian medicine for over 4,000 years. It is first referred to as Haridra in the Atharva Veda (approximately 1500 BCE). Used traditionally as a wound healer, blood purifier, and digestive. It is also sacred in Hindu ceremonies and integral to South Asian cuisine. Traditional Chinese Medicine classifies it as Jiang Huang and uses it for blood stasis and pain.

Curcumin, the primary active compound in turmeric, inhibits the NF-κB signaling pathway — the master switch for inflammation in the body. It blocks COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2) and LOX (lipoxygenase) enzymes, reducing inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Curcumin also scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS), chelates metal ions, and modulates over 700 genes involved in inflammation, cell survival, and tumor suppression. Its bioavailability is inherently low (~1%) but increases 2000% when taken with piperine (black pepper).

While culinary amounts are very safe, supplemental doses exceeding 8g/day of curcumin extract can cause severe GI distress, nausea, diarrhea, and headaches. Very high doses may cause liver injury — clinical cases of hepatotoxicity have been reported with high-dose turmeric supplements. Excessive intake increases oxalate levels, raising kidney stone risk. High doses can dangerously enhance blood-thinning effects, risking internal bleeding. Iron absorption is significantly reduced at very high doses, potentially worsening anemia.
