Turmeric (Haridra)
Natural approach for Inflammation & Blood Purification
đ In This Guide
đż About Turmeric (Haridra)
Called 'Indian Gold.' Haridra purifies the blood (Rakta Dhatu), reduces Ama (toxins), improves skin complexion, and strengthens Agni. Used in Ayurveda for 4000+ years.
đ Historical Use
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Indian and Southeast Asian medicine for over 4,000 years. It is first referred to as Haridra in the Atharva Veda (approximately 1500 BCE). Used traditionally as a wound healer, blood purifier, and digestive. It is also sacred in Hindu ceremonies and integral to South Asian cuisine. Traditional Chinese Medicine classifies it as Jiang Huang and uses it for blood stasis and pain.
đŹ How Turmeric (Haridra) Works
Curcumin, the primary active compound in turmeric, inhibits the NF-ÎșB signaling pathway â the master switch for inflammation in the body. It blocks COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2) and LOX (lipoxygenase) enzymes, reducing inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Curcumin also scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS), chelates metal ions, and modulates over 700 genes involved in inflammation, cell survival, and tumor suppression. Its bioavailability is inherently low (~1%) but increases 2000% when taken with piperine (black pepper).
đ What the Research Shows
A 2014 RCT (Kuptniratsaikul et al.) found that 1,500mg/day of Curcuma domestica extract was as effective as ibuprofen 1,200mg/day for knee osteoarthritis over 4 weeks with fewer gastrointestinal side effects. A 2017 comprehensive review (Hewlings & Kalman, Foods) confirmed curcumin's anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and cardioprotective properties across multiple clinical trials. A meta-analysis in J Med Food (Daily et al., 2016) found turmeric extract significantly reduced joint arthritis symptoms across 8 RCTs.

đ Dosage Guide
â ïž Safety & Precautions
May increase Vata in very high doses. Stains clothing. Use with black pepper and fat for absorption.
â ïž Overdose & Toxicity Risks
â ïž What happens if taken in excess:
While culinary amounts are very safe, supplemental doses exceeding 8g/day of curcumin extract can cause severe GI distress, nausea, diarrhea, and headaches. Very high doses may cause liver injury â clinical cases of hepatotoxicity have been reported with high-dose turmeric supplements. Excessive intake increases oxalate levels, raising kidney stone risk. High doses can dangerously enhance blood-thinning effects, risking internal bleeding. Iron absorption is significantly reduced at very high doses, potentially worsening anemia.
đ Drug Interactions
Can enhance the effects of blood thinners (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel) by inhibiting platelet aggregation â stop 2 weeks before surgery. May lower blood sugar and potentiate diabetes medications. Can increase bile secretion â avoid with gallstones or bile duct obstruction. May inhibit iron absorption and affect iron deficiency anemia treatment. Can interfere with certain chemotherapy drugs â consult oncologist before use.
