⚠️ Safety & Precautions
Avoid with hypertension — regular licorice raises BP. Limit to 2 weeks. Use DGL form if concerned.
☠️ Overdose & Toxicity Risks
⚠️ What happens if taken in excess:
Licorice root is one of the most dangerous herbs in overdose. Excessive intake (>50g/week or >2 weeks continuous use) causes pseudoaldosteronism — severe potassium depletion, sodium retention, edema, and dangerously high blood pressure. Can cause life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias from hypokalemia. Cases of rhabdomyolysis and kidney failure have been reported. The glycyrrhizin content is the toxic component — DGL (deglycyrrhizinated) form removes this risk.
