Evening primrose oil is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that eczema patients are often deficient in. GLA is a precursor to anti-inflammatory prostaglandins (PGE1) that calm the overactive immune response in atopic dermatitis. Both oral supplementation and topical application improve skin hydration, reduce redness, and decrease flare frequency.
Oral: Take 2-4g evening primrose oil capsules daily (providing ~240-480mg GLA). Topical: Apply evening primrose oil directly to affected areas before moisturizer. Allow 8-12 weeks for full effect from oral supplementation.
May increase bleeding risk — avoid with blood thinners. Stop 2 weeks before surgery. May lower seizure threshold — use caution with epilepsy. Mild GI effects possible. Not for use during pregnancy.
