Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) contains up to 35% mucilage that forms a thick, soothing gel when mixed with water. This gel creates a protective film over the esophageal and stomach lining, shielding it from acid damage. Clinical research shows marshmallow root significantly reduces heartburn severity and frequency when taken regularly before meals.
Cold infusion method: Soak 1 tablespoon dried marshmallow root in 1 cup cold water overnight (8+ hours). Strain and drink in the morning on an empty stomach. Alternatively, take 500mg capsules 3 times daily before meals.
May slow absorption of medications — take 2 hours apart. Generally very safe. Consult doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
