Peppermint oil ingestion in excess can cause heartburn, nausea, abdominal pain, and mouth sores. High doses of menthol (>1g) can cause tremors, ataxia, and respiratory depression. Undiluted peppermint oil applied to skin can cause chemical burns and allergic reactions. NEVER apply peppermint oil near the face of infants — it can cause laryngospasm and apnea (breathing cessation). Excessive oral use may worsen acid reflux by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter.
