Clove oil (eugenol) is toxic if ingested in concentrated form. As little as 10-30ml of clove oil can cause liver failure in adults. Symptoms of eugenol toxicity include nausea, vomiting, seizures, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Undiluted clove oil applied directly to gums can cause chemical burns, nerve damage, and tissue necrosis. Keep concentrated clove oil away from children — accidental ingestion can be life-threatening.
