Tulsi (Holy Basil)
Respiratory Health & Immunity
🌿 Tulsi (Holy Basil)
Sacred plant in Hinduism, called 'The Incomparable One.' Tulsi is a Sattvic (pure) herb that opens the heart and mind, clears Kapha from the lungs, and strengthens immunity.
📜 Antecedentes Históricos
Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum/sanctum) is documented in the Rig Veda (approximately 1500 BCE) and is one of the most sacred plants in Hindu tradition. It is grown in the courtyard of most Hindu households and is associated with the goddess Lakshmi. In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, it is classified as a Rasayana and used extensively for respiratory infections, fever, and stress. The Charaka Samhita describes it as a treatment for hiccups, cough, and poisoning.
🔬 Cómo Funciona (Mecanismo)
Tulsi contains eugenol (a COX-2 inhibitor also found in cloves), rosmarinic acid, apigenin, and ursolic acid. These compounds act synergistically to reduce cortisol, modulate inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-alpha), and enhance natural killer cell activity. Eugenol specifically provides analgesic and antipyretic effects. Tulsi also acts as an adaptogen by normalizing blood glucose and lipid levels through modulation of the HPA axis and PPAR-gamma receptors.
🔬 Resumen de Investigación
A 2012 RCT (Saxena et al., J Ayurveda Integr Med) found that 1200mg/day of Tulsi extract significantly reduced stress and anxiety symptoms (p<0.05) in healthy volunteers over 6 weeks. A comprehensive 2014 review (Cohen, J Ayurveda Integr Med) across 24 human studies found Tulsi demonstrated therapeutic effects for metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, immunity, and neurocognition. Animal studies consistently show antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli.

💊 Guía de Dosificación
⚠️ Seguridad y Precauciones
May reduce fertility temporarily. Avoid excessive use during pregnancy.
☠️ Riesgo de Toxicidad y Sobredosis
Excessive consumption of Tulsi (>10g dried herb or >2400mg extract daily) may cause blood thinning and increased bleeding risk. Very high doses may lower blood sugar to dangerous levels (hypoglycemia). Chronic overconsumption can reduce sperm count and male fertility. The eugenol content in very large amounts is hepatotoxic and may cause liver damage. Pregnant women should avoid all but culinary amounts as high doses may cause uterine contractions.
💊 Interacciones Medicamentosas
May potentiate anticoagulant medications (warfarin, heparin) by slowing blood clotting. May lower blood sugar — monitor closely if taking diabetes medications (metformin, insulin). May enhance the effects of anti-thyroid drugs. Can reduce fertility in men and women at high doses — avoid if actively trying to conceive.
